These shows were designed for the entertainment of servicemen and servicewomen overseas during the second world war and generally were not heard by audiences here in the United States. Guest hosts, such as Lum and Abner, Hopalong Cassidy (Bill Boyd), et. al, took song requests from soldiers and played their favorite records. Occasionally live bands took over musical performance duties.
